THE IONIZATION POTENTIAL AND HEAT OF FORMATION OF THE HYDROXYMETHYLENE RADICAL.

Abstract

The ionization potential of the CH2OH radical was determined directly as < or + 8.14 plus or minus 0.15 eV, giving the heat of formation of the radical as < or + -8.4 plus or minus 3 kcal/mole. This latter value was shown to agree with < or + values determined indirectly. Calculations were made of the bond dissociation energies in several alcohols, D(R-CH2OH), and these indicate that the presently accepted value for the heat of formation of CH2OH(+) may be slightly in error.
