SILICONE RESIN SYSTEMS IN ILLUMINATING FLARES,

Abstract

A commercially available silicone resin was evaluated in the MK 24 AP Flare candle configuration. The silicone resin was substituted for Laminac 4116 in the formula. At the three percent by weight level, the luminous intensity of the candles containing the silicone resin was about 20 percent less than the MK 24 candle. Future tests are planned to determine why the output degrades. Sensitivity tests on compositions containing the silicone resins were conducted. When 30/50 mesh atomized magnesium is used, the mix is insensitive. The silicone resin system is proposed for use in several other pyrotechnic formulations. (Author)
