SHELLS IN THE LIGHT OF GENERALIZED CONTINUA.

Abstract

Some aspects of recent developments in the nonlinear theories of deformable surfaces (as two dimensional generalized continua), including the Cosserat surface, are outlined with a view toward their application to the (three dimensional) elastic shells. A fairly detailed development of a linear theory of an elastic Cosserat surface is presented and some features of its constitutive equations are discussed. (Author)
