DIRECT NUMERICAL DETERMINATION OF STRESSES IN ELASTIC SOLIDS.

Abstract

Using Saint Venant's torsion problem for purposes of illustration, this paper presents a method for the direct determination of stresses in an elastic solid. The method is compared to finite difference techniques for the determination of the stress function. For a comparable numerical effort, the new method is shown to yield superior results. (Author)
