SYNTHESIS AND STRUCTURE OF NEW TYPES OF METAL ORGANIC COMPLEXES.
Abstract
A series of ligands containing three or more tertiary arsenic atoms was prepared. The coordinating properties of many of these ligands were examined and the complexes of the most promising ligands were studied in detail. The various attempts to prepare ligands that are able to form carbon to metal bonds by direct reaction with a metal or its halide are described. The stabilisation of a carbon to metal bond by making the ligand polydentate was finally achieved by an alternative approach. A series of terdentate oxygen donor ligands was prepared in the hope that the general polymeric form of the alkoxides of T1(I) could be reduced to a monomeric form if the alkoxide was part of a terdentate ligand. The resultant compounds remained polymeric and the conclusions drawn about the tendency of T1(I) to form clusters are discussed. Some interesting 'complexes' of carbon with a ditertiary arsine are described. The attachment of more than one arsenic to an aliphatic carbon appears to make the carbon susceptible to electrophilic attack. The remaining hydrogens are readily exchanged in protonic solvents and halogens, if present, are rapidly replaced by hydrogen if the compounds come into contact with water. (Author)
