RADAR OBSERVATION CONDITIONS OF POOR VISIBILITY,

Abstract

Ship navigational radar is an effective means for revealing above-water objects in conditions of poor visibility. A radar image of the surrounding situation permits identifying the shore and determining the place of the vessel with respect to distances up to selected objects and with respect to their bearings. The booklet considers the following: the role of radar in the prevention of collisions; the free-space range of different objects; the effect of interference and false signals on the radar image; and also the organization and equipment of observations. With correct organization of a radar observation and with the competent operation of the set, radar is a reliable means of detection of encountered vessels in conditions of poor visibility, and the skillfull use of radar information permits preventing a dangerous approach of vessels.
