A NOTE ON THE DRAG COEFFICIENT EVALUATION FOR CONICAL VEHICLES IN THE LOW-DENSITY TRANSITIONAL FLOW REGIME.

Abstract

A general expression for the drag coefficient for a slender conical vehicle moving at hypersonic velocity in the low density transitional flow regime is obtained in this note. The method of calculation of C sub D follows from Rosen's variational method of solution of the Boltzmann equation previously reported by the author in the literature. The theoretically predicted drag coefficient from the variational method is given in the Knudsen number range .01 < Kn < 100. Results are compared to existing continuum, viscous interaction, near free molecule, and free molecule theories in the regions where predictions of these theories overlap results obtained from the variational method.
