ODOR SENSING CELL ULTRASTRUCTURE BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY.

Abstract

The report is divided into four sections covering the ultrastructure of rabbit olfactory epithelium, the mapping of olfactory cells on the septum and ethmo-turbinals, the migration of centrioles in olfactory bipolar cells, and the comparison of olfactory epithelium ultrastructure in four vertebrate species. Fine details of the bipolar cells that are shown in electron photomicrographs include organelle concentration and location, internal structures of cilia, and varied cristae formations in mitochondria. Light photomacrographs are presented of serial sections taken at 0.45 mm intervals from the anterior end of the endo-turbinals through the cribriform plate. Total area of olfactory epithelium was measured and cell concentration was determined. Groups and linear formations of centrioles were observed in the cell bodies, throughout the lengths of the dendrites, and in terminal swellings. Centriole reduplication and migration are believed to be necessary for cilia replacement and cell regeneration. The ultrastructure of olfactory epithelium from rabbit, cat, dog, and frog is compared. Although the cells are similar in general, there are some specific differences. (Author)
