THE IDENTITY OF NOUN PHRASES

Abstract

The paper attempts to discuss certain difficulties in dealing with noun phrases that plague the current theory of transformational grammars. There seems to be a great uneasiness among the people actively engaged in theoretical work with the conservative transformational notions. It is pointed out that the new ideas that are now being circulated are mostly incompatible with and often opposite to the beliefs of early transformationalists.
