ABDOMINAL SURFACE POTENTIALS AND THEIR RELATION TO GASTRIC MOTILITY

Abstract

Reports in the American and Soviet literature have discussed the recording of electrical activity from electrodes on the surface of the abdomen (electrogastrogram or EGG) as a means of measuring gastric motility for research and clinical purposes. The complexity of the recordings has presented problems in analysis of the EGG and, hence, in specifying relations between it and other measures of gastric activity. The present report describes a method of pattern recognition which applies the techniques of autocorrelation and Fourier analysis to the reduction of this complexity and which provides information unattainable by more conventional methods. Further evidence is presented for the validity of the EGG as a measure of gastric activity: high correlations are demonstrated between frequency components of 3.5 to 5.5 waves per min. in simultaneous recordings of the EGG and of mechanograms obtained from strain gages sutured to the antral region of the cat's stomach. These correlations were found under both resting conditions and when gastric activity was manipulated by ip injection of physostigmine and Probanthine and by mechanical distention. It is suggested that other frequency components of the EGG are related to activity in the intestine.
