AUDITORY DAMAGE OF OPERATING PERSONNEL ABOARD GUIDED MISSILE SHIPS FROM SHORT-DURATION HIGH-INTENSITY NOISE.
Abstract
Data are presented on the noise levels involved during missile firings aboard the ships USS CANBERRA and BOSTON, the noise spectra, intensity levels, and durations, at various points near the firings. It was found that the noise spectra concentrated in the more damaging low frequencies and that the intensity levels all exceeded current damage-risk criteria, but are of brief duration. BuMed recommendations on high-intensity noise protection procedures are cited and preventive measures outlined. (Author)
