ON ENERGY INTEGRATION IN THE EAR.

Abstract

In the normal ear a threshold shift of 10 db is caused by reducing the duration of a pure tone 1 log unit below some critical duration. However, in some deafened ears it is shown that the threshold shift may amount to only 2-3 db; in other words, some ears can withstand a reduction in duration much better than normal ears. The effect is not found in all types of deafness, it is not confined to the hair cells, and it is suggested that it may appear only when the auditory defect has the effect of distributing a hydrodynamic pattern over a larger area of the basilar membrane.
