FIELD APPRAISAL OF THE ADVANCED RADAR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM (ARTS).

Abstract

The report presents the findings of the ARTS Field Appraisal (April 1965 - February 1966) and the Final Approach Spacing for ARTS (FASA) Field Appraisal (March - August 1966). Both were conducted in the TRACON Room of the Airport Traffic Control Tower, Atlanta, Georgia. The ARTS tracking and display features were basically acceptable for operational use; however, tracking process modifications and improved displays are needed. Operational advantages could be achieved by the authorized use of the Mode C altitude displays and the intra-facility handoff capability. The FASA field appraisal efforts were incomplete and inconclusive with respect to the original objectives. The amount of data collected during the field appraisal was too voluminous to be included in this document; therefore, only the more pertinent statistics have been used. The collected data is being retained, however, at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center for future use or analysis. (Author)
