THE RICE AND WALSH EQUATION OF STATE FOR WATER: DISCUSSION, LIMITATIONS, AND EXTENSIONS,

Abstract

An equation of state of water is examined in detail for the purpose of constructing a set of equilibrium relations for water over a range of thermodynamic variables suitable for nuclear burst and hypervelocity calculations in water. Analytic expressions and quadratures for the numerical results of Rice and Walsh are obtained, as well as approximate bounds on the region of validity of their method. The study also extends their results for the enthalpy-pressure-volume and energy-pressure-volume relations to 450 kilobars and presents a method for extrapolating a strip of the enthalpy-pressure-volume and energy-pressure-volume surfaces containing the Hugoniot curve to the Thomas-Fermi region (assumed to have a minimum pressure of 10 megabars).
