FUNCTIONS OF A MATRIX.

Abstract

This is an expository report consisting of two chapters. Chapter one contains some pertinent background material on Matrix Theory. This includes topics such as the norm of a matrix compatible with the norm of the signal space and other review materials. Chapter two deals with the problem of canonical representation of linear operators in finite-dimensional spaces. The Jordon canonical form is discussed in some detail. Several methods for the important problem of the evaluation of a function of a matrix are presented. The method of constituent, the theory of invariant factors, gamma-matrix, eigenvalue problems, and Cauchy's integral of a matrix are among the subjects treated here. (Author)
