UNDERROAD BORING MACHINE OUTFIT, HORIZONTAL AUGER-TYPE, 8-, 12- AND 16-INCH PIPE CASING CAPACITY.

Abstract

Report covers the testing and evaluation of an underroad boring machine outfit for use by troops engaged in the installation of Military pipeline crossings under highways and railroads. Tests were conducted to determine the ability of inexperienced personnel to use the equipment and to ascertain the structural and mechanical stability of the boring machine and its accessories. Conclusions: (a) An underroad boring machine outfit similar to the unit tested is suitable for use by troops engaged in the installation of underroad pipeline crossings and is acceptable for classification as Military Standard as Class II and Class IV items of supply; (b) neither service nor environmental testing of the boring machine outfit is necessary; and (c) TOE 5-177 for the Engineer Pipeline Equipment Support Company should be amended to include one underroad boring machine outfit and at least three trained underroad boring machine operators.
