RELATIONSHIP OF PERMEABILITY OF A GREASE TO ITS STABILITY.

Abstract

Nine greases were investigated. One was a commercial grease conforming to a Military Specification. Eight were made up experimentally from two different oils and five types of thickeners. Their physical characteristics, mechanical stabilities, and oil separations were determined. They were permeated with four different types of oils and their permeability coefficients determined. The permeabilities were in the same general order as their oil separations but differed significantly with the different oils used. This indicated some possible interaction between the oils and the thickener fibers. There was no correlation whatever between the permeability coefficients and the mechanical stabilities of the greases as established on the grease worker and Shell Roll tester. This would suggest that the mechanical stability of a grease had no relationship to its permeability coefficient. (Author)
