STUDIES ON THE VIRUSES OF MEASLES AND HEPATITIS.

Abstract

The support afforded by this and the preceeding contract represented a material factor in the development of a safe and effective measles vaccine which is now in general use in this country and elsewhere in the world. While it is regrettable that no progress was made toward the isolation and characterization of the hepatitis viruses, the time, effort and expense expended to this end is justified in our opinion by the importance of the problem in relation to military as well as civilian preventive medicine. Although the investigations on rubella virus have not yet led to any applications of practical value, certain observations have been made which have provided the basis for experimental work now in progress and which may ultimately yield results of value in the control of this disease.
