INFLUENCE OF THE DISSIPATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY ON THE TEMPERATURE OF THE LOW CHROMOSPHERE,

Abstract

The influence of the dissipation of mechanical (i.e., acoustical) energy on the temperature of the chromosphere between 0 and 1000 km is studied. Departures from L.T.E. in the ionization of H and H superscript minus are taken into account. The rate of dissipation given by Osterbrock (1961) is probably too large by a factor 10 or more in the first 300 km, but seems adequate around 1000 km. (Author)
