STRAIN-GRADIENT THEORIES OF MICROSTRUCTURE.

Abstract

The strain-gradient theories of Toupin and Mindlin are explored with a view to applications to periodic lattices and composite materials. The formulation of dynamic problems is dealt with in some detail. The resulting equations predict dispersion of plane waves, but it is not clear as yet whether it is versatile enough to predict all features of dispersion observed in lattices or composite materials.
