MEASUREMENT OF THE HYDROGEN SPIN EXCHANGE INTERACTION AND SPIN EXCHANGE CROSS SECTION WITH THE HYDROGEN MASER.

Abstract

The report describes the theory and experiments leading to the quantitative determination of the hydrogen spin exchange interaction in an oscillating hydrogen maser, and to the measurement of the spin exchange cross section of the hydrogen atom. A value of delta = 2.65 x 10 to the -15th power cm sq. at room temperature is obtained and compared to previously published values. A concept for increasing the output power of the hydrogen maser is given. An improvement by a factor of 50 seems feasible, which would significantly increase the short-term stability of the hydrogen maser. (Author)
