INVESTIGATION OF STRONTIUM TUNGSTATE MIXED CRYSTAL CATHODE.

Abstract

The purpose of the work described is to investigate the formation and characteristics of strontium-tungstate mixed crystal cathodes. The objective is the realization of a lower work function in a cathode which is relatively rugged compared with conventional oxide cathodes. Richardson plots and retarding field electron beam techniques were used to evaluate the work functions of sample cathodes. All cathodes were made by spraying the mixed materials onto a metallic substrate. Combinations prepared and evaluated were: strontium carbonate (SrCO3) on W, SrCO3 + W on Ta, SrCO3 + W on Ta with an SrCO3 underlayer, SrCO3 + W on Ta with a nickel intermediate, Sr3CO3 + W on Ni, and SrCO3 + W on P-50 nickel alloy.
