EDDY CURRENT TORQUES AND MOTION DECAY ON ROTATING SHELLS

Abstract

The report describes a study conducted to estimate the torques acting on electrically conducting shells rotating in a magnetic field. The basic electromagnetic expressions leading to an evaluation of torque are given using various approaches with comparisons for the spherical shell. Application of these techniques to cylindrical shells with flat and hemisphere shell ends is described. The torques both slow and alter the direction of the rotating motion, and the resultant decay time constants can be in the order of days. Factors affecting this decay time and influencing shell design are examined.
