PHOTOACTIVATION OF CERIUM, NEODYMIUM, SAMARIUM AND GADOLINIUM,

Abstract

The report presents reference data for activation analysis of cerium, neodymium, samarium, and gadolinium. Samples of approximately 1 gram each of cerium oxide, neodymium oxide, samarium oxide, and gadolinium oxide, were irradiated on the AFCRL linear accelerator with a bremsstrahlung beam. Conditions of irradiation are reported. Induced activities were measured with a gamma spectrometer, using a lithium drifted germanium detector. Results of these measurements are discussed and minor revisions in the decay schemes of Ce135, Nd141, Nd149, and Gd159 are proposed. The standard analytical sensitivity for cerium, neodymium, samarium, and gadolinium determinations is defined as the mass of the element which yields an activity of 1000 disintegrations per minute. These sensitivities vary from 0.2 mg (neodymium to 30 mg cerium). (Author)
