LABOR QUALITY AND THE INTERNATIONAL STRUCTURE OF LABOR PRODUCTIVITY AND WAGES,

Abstract

An analysis is presented to help gauge the plausibility of the view that labor quality is a key determinant of international differences in productivity and wages. It is believed that labor quality does play a very important role in determining interindustry differences in productivity and wages, and that these systematic differences are pervasive over a number of developed countries. The notion of a 'skill-intensity' of an industry is thus fairly well founded. When the implications of this view for international trade are examined the emphasis on labor quality is strongly reinforced.
