PROPAGATION OF WAVES IN SPECIAL MEDIA AND GEOMETRIES.

Abstract

A modal solution for a cylindrical waveguide of arbitrary cross section filled with longitudinally magnetized ferrite given by LI. G. Chambers is criticized. The so-called 'thermodynamic paradox' associated with a ferrite loaded rectangular waveguide is discussed. It is shown that various structures introduced by some authors to resolve the paradox are, even in the limit case, different structures from the original one leading to the 'paradox' and therefore they do not help in the resolution of the apparent inconsistency. Some experiments have been carried out in order to explain how in a physical structure the power is actually dissipated. The theoretical behaviour of some microwave ferrite structures has been experimentally verified by detecting the thermal rise produced by the dissipated r.f. power at certain characteristic regions. The solution found by other authors for the discontinuity problem between an empty rectangular waveguide and the same guide completely filled with transversely magnetized ferrite, solution which fails for a certain range of the ferrite parameters, has been modified by introducing a ferrite-metal surface wave, in order to obtain the correct solution. The problem of a plane uniform electromagnetic wave travelling in a vacuum region and obliquely impinging on a piezoelectric slab bounded on the opposite side by an elastic medium, either directly in contact with the piezoelectric medium or separated by it through a thin metallic sheet, has been considered. The power carried by the elastic wave transmitted in this last elastic medium has been computed for various values of the geometrical parameters and the maxima determined. (Author)
