ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF IRREDUCIBLE REALIZATIONS,

Abstract

This paper considers the problem of constructing an irreducible realization of a transfer-function matrix H(s), where one or more elements of H(s) contains multiple poles. An algorithm for constructing a realization using simple algebraic relationships is presented. In many cases, the realization obtained is irreducible, but in general it is not. A second algorithm presents a straightforward procedure for removing an uncontrollable and unobservable state variables from the realization obtained by Algorithm I, thus making it irreducible. An example illustrating the use of the algorithms is given. (Author)
