VANADIUM ALLOY STUDIES.

Abstract

Alloys based on V-Cb-Ta with small additions of Ti, Si, and C were arc-melted and fabricated to sheet by warm and cold rolling. Compositions containing 20% Cb, 25% Ta, 0.1% Si, and 0.05% C with up to 0.5% Ti had density-corrected strengths of 260,000-in. at 2000 degrees F and 70,000-in. at 2400 degrees F in the fully annealed condition. Cold-rolled and aged sheet had density-corrected strengths of 1,160,000-in. at -320 degrees F and 800,000-in. at room temperature. The optimum annealing temperature for cold worked stock was in the 2200 to 2300 degrees F range; lower annealing temperatures resulted in a loss of elevated-temperature strength. (Author)
