INVESTIGATION OF LOW WEIGHT FOCUSING SCHEMES FOR TRAVELING-WAVE TUBE AMPLIFIERS.

Abstract

The report describes the end results on a program concerned with the investigation of lightweight focusing schemes for low-noise TWT amplifiers. This involved the study of both hollow beam and solid beam low noise tubes. Hollow beam tubes with their inherent high gamma-a, low helix voltage, and short beam length are more suitable for PM focusing. Solid beam tubes with their relatively low gamma-a, high helix voltage, and long beam length are more amenable to reversed field focusing. A significant reduction in size and weight of these amplifiers was achieved without compromising the noise figure. This was accomplished by the development of miniaturized, short beam length tubes, a concommitant reduction in tubular magnet size and weight, and the use of new and improved magnetic materials.
