ANALYSIS OF ORTHOTROPIC PRESSURIZED CYLINDRICAL SHELL SUBJECTED TO RADIAL LINE LOADS ALONG EQUALLY SPACED GENERATORS,

Abstract

This report presents an analysis of the stresses and deflections in a long, orthotropic pressurized circular cylindrical shell subjected to radial line loads along generators equally spaced around the periphery. Equations that govern large deflections of circular cylindrical shells are suitably linearized to account for the influence of pressure coupling. Closed form solutions of the governing differential equations are given, and results of a parameter study employing a digital computer are presented. Results of the pressure coupling analysis are compared with those of a conventional linear analysis, and it is shown that stress and deflection data obtained from a linear analysis can be highly conservative, depending on loading and geometric parameters. Specialized forms of the present analysis are contrasted with related solutions given by Goldberg, Roark, and Donnell. (Author)
