ON THE PRECIPITATION OF SMALL PARTICLES FROM A VISCOUS FLUID BY AN ELECTRIC FIELD,

Abstract

To study the possibility of using an electric field to precipitate small unfilterable particles from a viscous oil, the trajectory equations are integrated for the path of a charged spherical particle in Poisueille flow between two parallel charged plates. The radius of the particle is assumed to be so small and the flow velocity so slow that the drag on the sphere is given by Stokes formula. The dimensionless length parameter for capture of the particle by one of the plates for a particle having an initial velocity equal to the fluid and starting at a given point in the channel is obtained as a function of a single dimensionless parameter. Graphs of the dimensionless distance parameter for capture of the particle are presented for several starting positions between the plates of the channel. (Author)
