CONCEPTUAL APPROACHES IN THE DESIGN OF OPTIMAL RADAR AND SONAR SYSTEMS: CANONICAL METHODS, MODELS, AND OPERATORS,

Abstract

Part of a study undertaken to develop formal methods for investigating the design of optimal radar (and sonar) systems as a totality and in terms of functional elements, in a way that treats the physical model, the system purpose, and the criteria involved in a unified fashion. This Memorandum specifically examines the context in which various canonical methods (based on the philosophy of statistical communication theory) can be used (1) to provide optimal system design or system structure, (2) to evaluate the expected performance of such systems, and (3) to compare the performance of these theoretical 'ideal' systems with that of their real approximations.
