ELASTIC BUCKLING AND PLASTIC COLLAPSE OF CIRCULAR TUBES UNDER HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE,

Abstract

An experimental method for studying elastic buckling and plastic collapse of circular tubes subjected to external pressure with superimposed hydrostatic load was developed. Tests on tubes of alpha brass and phosphor copper with t/D ratio ranging from 0.048 to 0.250 were conducted under hydrostatic pressures up to 100,000 psi. Preliminary results showed that the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the load carrying capacities of materials tested was insignificant but the effect on deformation was definite. (Author)
