FUEL CELLS.

Abstract

A major portion of the document is devoted to a consideration of initial military applications for fuel cells, a critical analysis and opinion as to the state of the art in achieving these applications, and a discussion of some of the problem areas associated with more widespread use of fuel cell systems. Specific attention is given to the classes of Army application for fuel cell power sources, assessing the attractiveness of these fuel cell power sources as compared to other possible advanced power source or energy conversion systems where this is applicable, and as far as possible to state an opinion of the specific problems which must be overcome to obtain technical feasibility and practicality. A topical discussion is given of several key areas in which it is felt that the status should be reviewed in a little more detail. Throughout the course of the various experimental investigations which have been sponsored in the name of fuel cell research, many new experimental techniques have been devised for studying electrochemical reactions. A few of these are summarized and their ability to help answer still unsolved problems is considered. The last section of the report reviews the significant fuel cell endeavors in France, the Netherlands, and Japan.
