LOW MAGNETIC SATURATION GARNETS.

Abstract

The substitution of gallium from 0 to 6 percent for iron in single crystal BiCaVIG was completed. The magnetization was observed to increase with initial gallium substitution then drop rapidly for gallium substitution greater than approximately 4 percent. The anisotropy field (2 K sub 1/M sub s) versus temperature is reported for an aluminum and a gallium substituted BiCaVIG. The room temperature anisotropy fields for these two materials are -35 and -16 oersteds, respectively. Reproducibility determination tests were conducted on 8 polycrystalline compositions. Two batches of each of the 8 compositions were prepared and the physical, magnetic and microwave properties compared. The agreement between properties of like compositions generally was within the accuracy of the measurement. Development was started on broadband below-resonance 'Y' junction circulators using BiCaVIG materials in the 2000 MHz region. Good operational characteristics have been obtained over narrow frequency bands, and the impedance characteristics appear favorable for broadband operation. (Author)
