FIBER OPTICS WITH EXTENDED ULTRAVIOLET TRANSMISSION.

Abstract

The objective of this contract is to conduct a research and development program leading to the fabrication of fiber-optic faceplates for cathode ray tubes with high transmission in the near- and medium-ultraviolet spectral regions. The first year's study is primarily to evaluate existing optical glasses (Phase I) and develop improved ones suitable for meeting the specific performance requirements of the contract (Phase II). Known commercial optical glasses having desirable properties, particularly in transmission, softening point, and refractive index, were initially screened. (Author)
