ON THE ACCELERATION OF BARGE TOWS,

Abstract

Equations are derived for the time required and distance traveled by a barge tow in accelerating from a stop to full speed. The general equations are applicable to any vehicle possessing drag-force and tractive-effort functions quadratic in velocity. In applying them to barge tows, Howe's estimates of tow resistance and effective-push were used. The resulting equations permit estimation of tow acceleration characteristics under a wide variety of tow and waterway combinations. Some examples are provided, and the resulting figures seem to be in accord with actual tow behavior. (Author)
