PREVENTIVE PERIODONTIC TREATMENT PROCEDURES: RESULTS AFTER ONE YEAR.
Abstract
Seven hundred thirteen men were randomly grouped into four major treatment groups (1, 2, 3, and 4, with groups 1 and 4 being broken down further into groups 1A and 1B and 4A and 4B). The groups differed with respect to the number of preventive periodontic procedures received per year and instruction in toothbrushing. Before the second treatment year, the participants were examined for gingival and periodontal health status and presence and extent of local irritants. The gingival health of all groups improved over the year, with the largest improvement being in the group that received four preventive periodontic treatments with concomitant toothbrushing instruction. Individuals receiving an equal number of preventive treatments but with no brushing instruction showed less improvement. Groups receiving brushing instruction had greater mean decreases (improvement) in plague scores than groups not receiving instruction. All groups showed a decrease in hard deposit scores for the year. (Author)
