INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRON BEAM AND HOLLOW CATHODE PROCESSING OF ALUMINUM OXIDE AND RELATED MATERIALS.

Abstract

The report deals with the preparation of oxide single crystals by electron beam and hollow cathode floating-zone methods. Primary emphasis has been placed upon the development of a modified crystal growing furnace which embodies many of the principles of floating-zone crystal growth evolving from previous work. The crystal growth furnace has been completed and subjected to crystal growth experiments which reveal that high perfection crystals can be grown by this method. It is expected that this furnace will find some widespread application to the growth of many refractory compound crystals currently of interest to the solid state technology. (Author)
