ON A NONLINEAR VIBRATING STRING.

Abstract

A nonlinear vibrating string equation is obtained from a careful derivation of the (linear) wave equation. The problem is shown to be not well-posed by construction of arbitrarily smooth initial data such that a singularity in the solution is produced, say at time t = T sub b. A result from the theory of monotone operators is used to obtain a lower bound of T sub b for a large class of initial data. (Author)
