STABILITY ANALYSIS OF DUAL-SPIN SATELLITES,

Abstract

Two alternative analytical techniques, the direct method of Lyapunov and the application of Floquet theory to linear variational equations, are used to examine the behavior of dual-spin satellites. Both approaches are discussed briefly and then applied to several specific systems, some of which contain passive energy dissipating mechanisms. The results show that properly designed dual-spin satellites can be stable in spin about an axis of minimum or maximum moment of inertia even in the presence of energy dissipation. (Author)
