SPLINES, N-WIDTHS AND OPTIMAL APPROXIMATIONS.

Abstract

The Kolmogorov concept of n-width of classes of functions which is based on optimal approximating n-dimensional subspaces is modified to include optimal n-flats. As a special case, splines appear as optimal 0-flats. Applications include the H superscript m-extension problem for functions of a real variable. (Author)
