INVESTIGATION OF SOLID FILM LUBRICATED AIR BEARING TURBINE AT 80,000 RPM,

Abstract

An air cycling machine designed to function at speeds of 80,000 rpm on hydrostatic gas bearing lubrication was inoperable at speeds above 55,000 rpm. Redesign of the rub shoes and rotor shaft utilizing the preferential Mo-MoS2 principle resulted in operation at the maximum design speed of 80,000 rpm and further established the advantage of a hybrid system of air bearings and solid film lubricant.
