BASIC RESEARCH IN ACTION: INSIGHT.

Abstract

To give an example of basic research of value to the Air Force, this study tracks down applications related to a contract sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. By literature search and by interview with the investigators, Air Force users and other experts, the impact of AF 18(600)-371, Chemistry of Photographic Development, was traced. The contract itself produced publications on developer analysis that are still referenced worldwide. A means of recovering over-exposed pictures was discovered. Related applications, derived from work sponsored by numerous Air Force and DOD agencies, have provided extensive payoff to the funds invested by AFOSR from 1952-58. (Author)
