SOLVENT EXTRACTION STUDY OF METAL FLUOROACETYLACETONATES,

Abstract

Solvent extraction studies employing benzene or chloroform solutions of 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione (H(hfa)), 1,1,1,2,2,6,6,6-octafluoro-3,5-hexanedione (H(ofhd)), 1,1,1,2,2,3,3,7,7,7-decafluoro-4,6-heptanedione (H(dfhd)), and 1,1,1,2,2,3,3-heptafluoro-7,7-dimethyl-4,6-octanedione (H(fod)) are described. Enhancement of extraction efficiency via adduct formation with isobutylamine (IBA) is also described for most systems. Log distribution ratio-pH data and equilibration time studies are presented for the extraction of zinc, cobalt(II), nickel, and cadmium with chloroform-H(hfa)-IBA; for the extraction of zinc and cobalt(II) with chloroform-H(ofhd) and with chloroform-H(ofhd)-IBA; for the extraction of zinc and cobalt(II) with chloroform-H(dfhd) and with chloroform-H(dfhd)-IBA; and for the extraction of zinc, cobalt(II), cobalt(III), and iron(III) with benzene-H(fod). The extraction of trace beryllium with benzene containing copper trifluoroacetylacetonate via an exchange reaction is discussed and the effect of beryllium concentration and copper trifluoroacetylacetonate concentration is noted. The synthesis and purification of H(ofhd) and H(dfhd) are described in detail, and NMR data, infrared spectra, density, and refractive index measurements of these beta-diketones are reported.
