FEASIBILITY STUDY OF A SEDIMENT POD FOR SUBMERSIBLE USE.

Abstract

The objective of the Sediment Pod (SEDOPOD) Study Program is to provide the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Deep Vehicle Branch, with information necessary to purchase and fabricate a sensor package capable of measuring several mass properties of unconsolidated bottom sediments. The resulting design when fabricated shall be deployed by a submersible vehicle which shall make in situ measurements and record at several bottom locations. The device will measure the sediment parameters of sound velocity, sound attenuation, density, temperature, shear strength, and Eh/pH in water depths to 20,000 feet with 3 foot sediment penetration.
