A SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF ST IGNATIUS-KUMU, RUPUNUNI DISTRICT.

Abstract

A detailed understanding of Amerindian agriculture is impossible without an intensive and accurate study of demography and social life. The author has examined these two factors in the village of St. Ignatius-Kumu, where considerable economic and social change has resulted from the proximity of the village to Letheml the administrative centre of the area. The author has described the village inhabitants and their houses, their contact with nearby Brazil, which has resulted in a multi-lingual society, and their education. The occupations of the villagers are then examined, particularly farming, livestock, hunting and fishing, so that an idea of diet can be gained. In conclusion the advantages of a weekly market in Lethem, and the introduction of new plants are stressed. Because much agriculture occurs so far from the villages, resiting some is advocated, so that those like St. Ignatius do not become either temporary villages or labour compounds. (Author)
