INERTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINDS AND THEIR PREDICTIVE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE WATER MOVEMENTS OFF SOUTHWEST AFRICA.

Abstract

The report gives a summary of work done on correlations of the winds off the west coast of South Africa with the strength of the Benguela Current and associated upwelling as well as the northwestward penetration of the Agulhas Current water round the Cape from the Indian Ocean into the South Atlantic, from a consideration of surface temperatures during 1951-1961. Preliminary results obtained from this study are to be presented at the April 1-5 meeting of the joint American, British, German meteorological societies and the German Geophysical Society in Hamburg.
