THE IDENTIFICATION DILEMMA.
Abstract
One of the more reliable methods of proving positive identification of mutilated bodies is the use of the oral complex. There are two reasons why the teeth and surrounding structures are used for identification: (1) their relatively great resistance to destruction, and (2) the individuality of their components. A relatively new technic called a panoramic radiography may assist in the identification. Panoramic radiography is a simplified extraoral procedure which visualizes the entire maxillomandibular region in a single film. Panoramic radiography can be very useful in detecting fractures or other pathologic conditions. As valuable an aid as this technic is for living patients, it can be even more valuable in identification.
