VARIABILITY IN HUMAN PAROTID FLUID OSMOLALITY, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, AMYLASE, ACID PHOSPHATASE, AND GLUCOSE.

Abstract

One hundred parotid fluid samples were collected from each of 11 healthy young adult males. Collections were made five times daily, Monday through Friday, over a 4-week experimental period. Rate of flow was recorded and the measurements were made of osmolality, specific gravity, amylase, acid phosphatase, and glucose. Minute secretion rates were calculated for the chemical variables under test. Variations due to differences between subjects, times of day, days, weeks, and associated interactions were evaluated. Both between-subjects and within-subjects tolerance limits were computed to establish upper and lower bounds of anticipated subsequent samplings of these individuals. (Author)
